These points are well taken. Bear in mind, however, that physicians are not generally inclined to take unsolicited medical advice from a religious publishing corporation to begin with, particularly when there is no double blind study to confirm it is a best practice. Additionally, it would be a mistake to assume that every pregnant JW woman is getting HLC advance, because that is not happening, and neither do we want it to as it could interfere with free and informed choice. These situations are unpredictable, and typically extremely urgent. The study is important enough for WT to make a special effort to bring it to the attention of all obstetricians if possible, to update their materials to include it, and perhaps have an article available to the general JW population.

It appears to have the potential to reduce mortality by 20%-30% in the general population who have access to the safety net of red cell transfusion. The benefit to JW mothers will be less, but now there is strong evidence to support its early use at the first sign of bleeding.

If you had to choose
by dothemath inif you had to choose to belong to 1 religion, i was curious as to what any on the forum would pick.. i realize most here are likely atheist (i would have to say i'm agnostic), but if any would like to share their opinion, and maybe why?.

I am a faith practicing Deist/Agnostic with Buddhist leanings. If I had to chose one? How about kindness, or maybe love. Those would both be excellent on their own.

Extremely skeptical. Oxygen deprivation = organ damage and death. There remain many situations where there are simply no alternatives to transfusion of red cells, platelets and plasma.

Apologists saying that the JWs shouldn't be banned, what the hell!??
by Crazyguy init's been brought to my attention that there are xjw that say they support the witnesses and don't think russia should ban them.
i would just like to remind all of you that jws are guilty of murder, causing higher rates of suicide, covering up child molestation, and keeping members in prisoned because if they leave they loose family, financial support, possible employment etc.. sure their not strapping bombs to their chests but they easily get members to kill themselves with their blood policies.
they are an extremist group!

The ban will not stop Jehovah's Witnesses or the Watchtower Society. The approach most likely to promote change is to require full disclosure of the Watchtower's history to individuals they are trying to attract as new members, to make it unlawful for them to bind individuals who joined (by becoming baptized) when they were legally minors, and to withhold tax exempt status until they reform harmful policy related to child abuse, blood products, shunning, women and higher education.

Even if it's not the truth, it's still the best way to live
by Simon inhow many times did you hear that gem?
it often went along with "the truth is a protection" which is their way of saying "living a moral life is good for you ... and you can't do that without us".. but think about what people are really saying.
i think the real message is "i know it's not the truth, but i chose to follow it anyway".. it seems like a pre-emptive argument because they know they can't defend it as "the truth" so instead they switch to defending it as a lifestyle.. of course any kind of lifestyle that has a decent moral ingredient to it, respect for law and order, discipline etc... probably increases people's chances of doing better in life, but they don't have a monopoly on it.. so just remember, next time you hear someone saying "even if it's not the truth" what they are really admitting is that they already know it isn't..

The city overseer (pretty large city) actually said this to me. Word for word as I recall. One of his sons basically drank himself to death, the other was addicted to pain medication and ended up disfellowshippped. I understand that he was nearly DF for continuing to talk to the youngest. Oddly, I guess that he probably still feels pretty much the same way. Many hit a point where they know they are "all in", and just try to find a silver lining perhaps. It certainly is not the best way of life, not even close.

It is of some interest that Watchtower appears to like this V.A. document to the point that they are willing to distribute it. You will note that the VA includes a WT permitted treatment "cryoprecipitate" as one of the major components of blood. Cryosupernatant is a staggering 99% of blood plasma - also WT approved.

Should Blood Transfusions be forced?
by Fisherman in1.there are times when a doctor decides that the only life saving medical treatment -short of a miracle- is a blood transfusion.
in such a case, what should be done when a person refuses treatment on religious grounds and why?.
2. should a person be allowed to "mutilate" his body and why?.

Physicians need to respect the wishes of their adult JW patients. However, they first need to have a private consultation with the patient with no other JWs present. They need to ascertain the patients level of commitment to the policy, as well as their understanding of the risks associated with declining various types of blood products presently banned by the WT. JW patients are often under duress and coercion to support the policy, and they have been given only the facts that support WT policy. Only after being comfortable that the patient has provided full and informed consent should the doctor proceed. Some JW patients accept all blood products. In these situations, doctors and hospitals have a responsibility to protect their privacy.

How did you feel when you got baptized?
by Schnufti inback in 2005, i remember sitting in the stadium in the special rows with 42 others.
8000 people were looking at us - maybe even with a binocular - while listening to the speech.
my family and my friends among them, being all proud of me.. i don't remember being enthusiastic.

It was November, 3 months after Woodstock, I shivered. I was a month shy of being 10 years old. That is what I remember.
